A concept of the sharing economy in tourism was invented long before the modern digital solutions. For many decades, local population from the Croatian coast is “sharing” free rooms in their houses with tourists from all around the world. This type of business is popularly called “Zimmer Frei”, because the main target groups of tourists are coming from Germany.
Tourism accounts for around 18% of the Croatian GDP and the private accommodation makes around 50% of the total accommodation capacity. 2017 is expected to be the record tourist season, approaching the year 2020 target of 100 million overnight stays. In order to reach beyond this magical figure, tourists should be offered with more than a warm summer sun, beautiful beaches and a room with a view.
